Broad bean woes

Since March, Mrs Jim and I have been having a bash at growing our own veg in raised beds in the front garden. An unusual location, but it's the only south facing land we have and it gave me a good excuse for getting rid of the grass / lawn thing that was there previously. Everything seemed to be going fairly well - just about everything germinated and we got a great batch of salad and spinach, some of the early broad (fava) beans flowered and grew good pods. However, the second flight of broad beans did not flower, and had badly curled leaves.

I couldn't figure out what the problem was. Right amount of water, lots of light, no pests. I saw a mention of leaf distortion in relationship to peas, which can apparently be caused by growing them in soil that's too rich. Could be that - the beds were filled with compost and manure about 2 weeks before planting. Another possibility is that it's a weedkiller, aminopyralid:
Any other ideas? The way things are going I won't have anywhere near enough for when the census taker comes round.
